Koeman opens up on Barca release clause

The manager has offered some more detail on his deal

Netherlands coach Ronald Koeman has been talking about the release clause that exists in his contract with the Dutch national side that allows him to join Barcelona.

The clause was revealed by KNVB director Nico-Jan Hoogma in October, and Koeman has talked about how the information shouldn’t really have been leaked.

He also went on to explain a little more about the clause and how it works.

“It’s only about Barcelona and only about a moment after the European Championships. I am not leaving now, that is one hundred per cent certain,” he said.

“After the European Championships there is an evaluation moment, who knows, the KNVB will say:” We have performed so badly at the European Championships, we are not going any further but I have the opportunity to leave for one club. And there’s only one club in it.

“And I can safely say that I am not leaving for anyone else as the national coach of the Dutch national team.”

Koeman took over as national team boss in February 2018 and has the Netherlands top of Group C in Euro 2020 qualifying and looking on course to make it to their final major tournament since the 2014 World Cup.

His name has been linked with the Barcelona job in the past and may well be again, particularly with Ernesto Valverde under scrutiny after Saturday’s defeat to Levante.
