Piqué escapes ban for saying refs favor Madrid
The investigation into the Barcelona defender’s comments has been closed
Barcelona defender Gerard Piqué will not be subject to sanctions by the Spanish Federation after the Competition Committee decided to close their investigation into the player’s comments in regards to Spanish referees and their support of Real Madrid, according to Cadena SER.
Piqué made the comments in a YouTube interview that was published last February in which he cited a comment from a former referee that 85% of Spanish officials were Real Madrid fans, and Piqué argued that could have been the reason why so many controversial decisions were given in Real’s favor when they won La Liga last season.
“How are they not going to favour Real Madrid. Even if they do it unconsciously, how are they not going to be kinder to one side over the other. I respect referees’ professionalism and I know that they’re doing the best job possible, but when there’s a moment of doubt what will they do?”

The investigation found that Piqué’s comments did not break the federation’s rules on publicly questioning the honor and impartiality of match officials. Piqué was facing a potential four-game suspension if he were to be found guilty, but there will be no sanctions and Gerard is free to play.
