The defender’s feeling optimistic

Barcelona defender Gerard Pique has been talking about a range of topics to La Sotana, including the future of the club and when he expects to retire.

The 34-year-old admits that there is no guarantee he will still be at the club next season and he will walk away when he feels he’s no longer good enough.

“I will retire at Barça. This could be the last season, yes. I go year after year, so I cannot assure that I will be 100% next season.

“The day I see that I cannot give the team everything. I’ve been giving these years I’ll go. I know when I’m good and when I’m not.”

Pique also defended teammate Samuel Umtiti, who has come in for criticism this season and been whistled by supporters, for staying at the club despite it seeming clear he’s been deemed surplus to requirements.

“He’s fulfilling his contract with all obligations. People have to be empathetic. His attitude is impeccable,” he added.

“He has never missed a single workout. Whistles towards him? Most people have been in a business for 30 years and don’t do nothing.”

The defender also tipped Eric Garcia to become “a great center-back” for Barcelona, and there was also a pretty honest assessment of former president Josep Maria Bartomeu.

“I am not able to say if he is the worst. That I have lived, he must be there. We are all guilty but it is true that the club has not gone where all the culés want,” he said.

Yet despite all the problems surrounding the club Pique is optimistic about the future at the Camp Nou. He added, “Now I am hopeful and excited. The next 5 or 10 years will be very good for Barça.”
