Barça B were unable to pick up three points in their first home match of the season against Pobla Mafumet on Saturday at the Miniestadi.

Gerard López’s side dominated possession and created a number of good chances to win the match but were ultimately stopped by the opposition goalkeeper Varo.

The visiting keeper made a handful of important stops to keep Barça at bay in the first half but his most decisive contribution came in the final minute of the game as he denied Álex Grimaldo from the penalty spot.

The goal which wouldn’t come

Barça B started the game brightly, with a series of attempts on goal in the first 20 minutes. Jean Marie Dongou had the first effort of the game after combining well with Godswill Ekpolo.

Dongou then came mightily close to creating the opening goal after some great individual skill to set up Juan Cámara but the Andalusian’s strike grazed the post. Moments later, Cámara found the target but was denied by a superb stop by Varo.

After resisting the early storm, Pobla slowly found their way into the game and brought a couple of good saves out of Adrián Ortolá, first from Kike Tortosa’s cross-shot and then Alvaro’s effort.

Late heartbreak

Nevertheless, the main protagonist of the day was Varo who thwarted everything that Barça B threw at him. Dongou again came close late in the second half but the keeper made an excellent reflex save with his legs. The same pattern would follow in the second period as a powerful shot from Cámara was denied just shy of the hour mark.

For all of his previous work, Varo would save his most telling contribution for the final of the minute. Grimaldo had the chance to claim all three points from the penalty spot in the 90th minute but Varo guessed the right way and denied Barça B victory in the first home game of the season.
