Barça got their league campaign off to a winning start at San Mamés, with Luis Suárez getting the only goal of the game to secure three valuable points on the opening weekend. Here we pick out the key stats from the game in Bilbao.

FC Barcelona had ten shots on goal, four of which were on target. Athletic only had two goal attempts and were also vastly outnumbered in possession, with the Catalans holding onto the ball for 69% of the game.

Jordi Alba provided the assist for Luis Suárez’s goal and also led the team in passes with 99.

However, more of Javier Mascherano’s passes made the target. 85 of his passes were completed while Alba was limited to 75.

Sergi Roberto, who came on for the injured Dani Alves and was widely praised for his performance, made the most crosses into the area.

Thomas Vermaelen received the most passes in the game, 28. The Belgian had a fine afternoon in defence, for he also won the balls, a total of 12.

Leo Messi ran at the opposing defence more than any other player, with five such solo runs in total. He also led Barça in shots on goal, with four.

Claudio Bravo was only called upon to make saves twice in the game, but did his job on both occasions. That’s seven clean sheets in a row for the Chilean.

FC Barcelona started their league season with a win for the seventh year in a row.

In three games since the opening of the new San Mam, Barça have won twice and lost once.
