Angry Sevilla hit out at Spanish Super Cup decision

The Andalusians are really quite cross

Sevilla have hit out at the RFEF’s decision to change the Spanish Super Cup to a one-off match and reckon it’s been done to help Barcelona.

Barcelona have announced that the match will be played on 12 August at a neutral venue, with many reports suggesting it could take place in Tangier, Morocco.

Sevilla are not having any of it though and have issued an official statement listing their complaints. It’s quite a lengthy statement but here’s what they’re not happy about:

“Sevilla FC would like to publicly express its absolute disagreement with the decision made, which has not taken the normal format of the competition to this date into account (that being a two-legged fixture); moreover, a decision that is exceptional, with the RFEF intending to continue organising the competition with two-legs in future seasons.

“It seems clear that the RFEF has taken a specific decision for the present edition of the competition with the exclusive intention of solving the problems of FC Barcelona, disregarding the requests of Sevilla FC, which, since the RFEF’s occupation of the matter, has insisted on working with the 5th and 12th of August - as were set out in the approved La Liga Football Calendar - as the appropriate dates for the final.”

Sevilla say the decision to play just one match is “unjust” but that they “will not refuse to play.”

It’s all a bit of a mess really largely because of fixture congestion with Sevilla set to play Europa League qualifiers in July and August and Barcelona in the US for their pre-season tour.
