Barca’s non-EU spots have become a real problem

The club has big decisions to make

Barcelona have definitely made a lot of good moves this summer. The acquisition of Arthur, Lenglet and Malcom have been praised by fans and critics alike, while Arturo Vidal is an established player regardless of whether he’s a fan-favourite.

Three of Barcelona’s four signings, however, currently occupy non-EU spots. Arthur, Malcom and Arturo Vidal do not have European citizenship while it is still unclear whether Coutinho has managed to acquire a Portuguese passport.

Marlon Santos and Yerry Mina are also not European citizens which means that Barcelona currently has to let go at least one of their South American right-footed centre-backs, if not both.

A solution to this would be to promote someone from the B-team to back Gerard Pique or go all out for De Ligt or De Jong, since they’re both capable of playing in the heart of the defense and have European citizenship.

However, with Thomas Vermaelen still being key to Ernesto Valverde’s plans this season according to rumours, the chances of either of those moves happening is incredibly slim.

Hopefully, the club can sort its non-EU spots as quickly as possible.
