Barca considering three left-back options - report

The club need support for Jordi Alba

Barcelona’s lack of options beyond Jordi Alba at left-back has become an issue this season, particularly with the defender ruled out of Sunday’s clash at Athletic Bilbao due to suspension.

The club allowed Lucas Digne and Marc Cucurella to leave in the summer and failed to bring in any replacements. Sergi Roberto, Nelson Semedo and Juan Miranda have all played at left-back this season with varying degrees of success.

Mundo Deportivo now suggest Barcelona are keen to strengthen the left-back position and have three options in mind ahead of the summer transfer window.

The first is Lyon’s Ferland Mendy who is a regular for the Ligue 1 side and has already been called up to the France national team.

The 23-year-old is young, quick, loves to get forward and, at the moment at least, is the club’s top choice.

Of course Barcelona face Lyon in the last 16 of the Champions League so will get a chance to have a proper look at the youngster over the two legs.

Also on the list is Atletico Madrid veteran Filipe Luis who is out of contract in the summer, and the view is he’d be happy to come to the Camp Nou and be Alba’s back-up.

The final name on the list is Real Betis’ Junior Firpo. Barca are said to have a good relationship with Betis, but the Brazilian’s €50m buyout clause may be an issue. However, the two clubs recently joined together to sign Emerson who could be used in the deal.
