Barcelona confirm they asked Frenkie de Jong to eliminate Real Madrid

Club president Josep Maria Bartomeu said it’s all true

Frenkie de Jong has already gotten a taste of what it’s like to win at the Santiago Bernabéu, something that’s becoming a habit for Barcelona players. While he currently plays for Ajax, the midfielder has already agreed to join the Catalans next season.

After eliminating Madrid with a 4-1 win, De Jong told reporters Barcelona had asked him to do his best to try to eliminate Madrid with Ajax. Now, we are hearing confirmation from club president Josep Maria Bartomeu that they did indeed make that request when they signed him.

Speaking to Cadena SER, Bartomeu confirmed the story, adding that he was delighted with the young midfielder’s performance. “I spoke with him and he was very happy. I’m also very happy for him because for sure that matches and knockout rounds like this will make him a better player,” he said.

“Frenkie will mark an important era at Barça,” he predicted.

Bartomeu said he did not want to revel in others’ misfortunes too much, but he did recognize that Madrid’s exit meant that “there would be one less strong rival to beat” to win the UEFA Champions League.
