De Jong: Barcelona told me to try and knock Real Madrid out

The midfielder faces Los Blancos at the Bernabeu

Frenkie de Jong faces Real Madrid with Ajax on Tuesday night and says Barcelona have asked him to try and knock out Los Blancos.

Ajax trail 2-1 from the first leg and face an uphill task to progress with the return being at the Santiago Bernabeu.

De Jong said he hasn’t spoken to Barca ahead of the match but that the tie was discussed when he signed his contract back in January.

“No not yet. Only during my contract signing, they said: try to knock out Real. That would also be great for Barça, of course,” he said.

“On Saturday I watched the game on TV. Not to analyze Real Madrid, but of course I looked at something different than normal, because we will play against Real. But I was mainly on the couch as a fan.

“We have to play offensively, apply pressure and play football. If everyone participates, we have enough quality to cause a surprise.”

Ajax caused Real Madrid problems in the first leg and had a goal by Nicolás Tagliafico controversially ruled out by VAR.

Meanwhile, Santiago Solari’s side have lost their last three home matches in a row but will still be big favourites to go through.
