Barcelona Femeni beaten in Women’s Champions League final

The French giants retained their trophy in Hungary

Barcelona Femeni suffered defeat in Saturday’s Women’s Champions League final, losing 4-1 to holders Lyon Feminine in Budapest.

The French giants were 4-0 up at half-time thanks to goals from Dzsenifer Marozsan and an Ada Hegerberg hat-trick, while Asisat Oshoala scored an 89th minute consolation goal for Barca.

The win means Lyon win the Women’s Champions League for a fourth year in a row and continue their dominance in the competition.

Barcelona coach Lluís Cortés felt his team’s inexperience was a factor and offered his view after the match.

“We don’t have the final experience of Lyon. It was the first for all of us and that counted against us in the early minutes. We wanted to get through those early minutes as we knew Lyon would push hard – we discussed it over and over again before the match. The emotional factor does make the difference but now we’ve had that experience that we can tap into in the future.”

Carles Puyol also tweeted about his pride in the team who were in the Champions League final for the first time in their history.
