Messi shortlisted for UEFA Men’s Player of the Year Award
Virgil van Dijk and Cristiano Ronaldo are also in the running
Barcelona captain Lionel Messi has been shortlisted for the 2018/19 Uefa Men’s Player of the Year Award alongside Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk and Cristiano Ronaldo.
The winner is due to be announced on Thursday 29 August in Monaco during the draw for the group stages of the Champions League.
Messi was the top goalscorer in Europe, the Champions League and La Liga last season as he picked up his 10th league title with the Catalan giants.

He is up for the award along with Champions League winner Van Dijk and Ronaldo, who landed the UEFA Nations League with Portugal and the Serie A title with Juventus.
The shortlist was compiled by a selection of coaches (from clubs in the Champions League and Europa League) and journalists from across Europe.
Players were judged on their performances across all competitions throughout the campaign for both club and country.
Messi has also been nominated for the Forward of the Season Award, while Frenkie de Jong is on the shortlist for the Midfielder of the Season Award (full details are available here),
