Pique: Athletic defeat will be good for Barcelona

The defender offered his thoughts at San Mames

Gerard Pique reckons Barcelona’s 1-0 defeat to Athletic Bilbao on Friday night could end up being good for the La Liga champions.

An 89th minute strike from substitute Aritz Aduriz handed the hosts all three points and ensured Barca kicked off the defence of their title with defeat.

Pique was happy to talk about the loss after the match and said he’d rather it happened now than at the end of the season.

“We knew that we were playing at a very difficult stadium. For a while they overcame us physically and we were not ourselves,” he said.

”The defeat is good for us. Better now than at the end of the season. We’re coming from pre-season, there are new players. And sometimes you prepare for games in one way and they go another.”
