Patrick Kluivert receives good reviews for work as youth director

The former striker has received plaudits for his work

Patrick Kluivert is earning rave reviews in the press so far for his work as academy director. The former Barcelona and Netherlands striker has gone to work as soon as he was hired at the end of the past transfer window and received plaudits in the press for his progress.

He’s said to be working on the renewals of several Cadete A (U15) promises. Jordi Roura and Aureli Altimira, two longtime employees of Barcelona, are also said to be working with Kluivert on improving La Masia. In an article titled “Kluivert moves quickly and well at La Masia,” Diario SPORT says Kluivert’s arrival, and the departure of Pep Segura, has been met with optimism at Barcelona’s youth academy.

While Ansu Fati represents the case of a player advancing extremely fast through the youth ranks and into the senior team, and quite successfully at that, the article states that Kluivert and his associates think sometimes it’s best to be calm and proceed at a slower rate.

Kluivert scored almost 100 La Liga goals, most with Barcelona, in his time as a player. He’s also remembered for his part in the legendary Ajax team that won the UEFA Champions League in 1995, scoring the only goal in the final to defeat AC Milan 1-0. He scored 40 goals for the Dutch national team as well, becoming one of the main stars for the team in the 90s.

After retirement, Kluivert spent time as an assistant manager for different clubs and once for the Netherlands national team. In 2016 he became Paris Saint-Germain’s director of football, though he eventually left that post to become an assistant manager for the Cameroonian national team. He left that job after a year to join Barcelona.
