Deschamps defends Lenglet after France blunder

The defender was at fault for Moldova’s goal

France boss Didier Deschamps has defended Clement Lenglet after the world champions’ 2-1 win over Moldova in Euro 2020 qualifying.

Lenglet was a fault for the opening goal with a poor header that allowed Vadim Rata to go on and score after just nine minutes.

France hit back with goals from Raphael Varane and Olivier Giroud to secure all three points and a place in next year’s tournament.

Deschamps backed the Barcelona defender after the match.

“Clement knows he made a mistake, it can happen to anyone, he does not have a lot of experience with us yet, it will come in. This error conditioned him for the rest of the match. He was serious and applied, yet he must not feel guilty. It was a bad analysis of the situation at the time. Obviously he would have liked to avoid committing it, but it can happen I know what he is capable of and he has my confidence.”

The win puts France top of the group ahead of their final fixture against Albania. They will finish as group winners with another win or in the unlikely event Turkey fail to beat Andorra.
