But the defender feels criticism has been excessive

Gerard Pique has been talking about Barcelona’s start to the season and says that while the team could be playing better he feels the criticism they have received is excessive.

Ernesto Valverde’s side currently top La Liga but have already suffered three defeats, as many as they managed in the entirety of the 2018-19 campaign.

The team have also struggled to convince in Europe, despite topping a tough Champions League group, but Pique says there is no need for alarm.

“We have won the last two leagues, we are the leaders in La Liga and in our Champions League group and the criticism we are receiving is excessive. Can we play better? Of course, but there is still a lot of the season left.

“Barça is the least results team in the world. Here it is not only worth winning. We have to win playing well and it is true that right now we are not at the level expected.

“We have talked about it in the locker room. It is not the first time something like this has happened in all the years that I have been at Barça. But you have to keep calm and not get nervous.”
