It was a fabulous advert for La Liga as a product. It was intense. It was dramatic. Either side could have won, with every minute of this thriller bringing gripping new twists. The Wanda was absolutely roaring all the way… at least until there were just five minutes to go and the total deadlock was broken by the man who does these things best.

Raised by fans in the Wanda Metropolitano’s Fondo Sur in the pouring rain, midway through the second half of a thrilling game that ended in a late 1-0 victory for Barcelona over Atletico Madrid, there was little doubt of the intended target.

The supporters at the Wanda Metropolitano did not only welcome Antoine Griezmann back on Sunday with whistles, offensive chants and banners, but they also threw objects on to the pitch. However, the objects thrown had nothing to do with Griezmann, but were launched after Lionel Messi’s 86th-minute winner in Madrid.

All set for the Ballon d’Or gala in Paris | FC Barcelona
Monday sees the gala for the Ballon d’Or award take place in Paris, France. All eyes will be on Barça striker Leo Messi as the Argentine is in line for the prize given to the best player of the year for the sixth time in his career. After winning his first Ballon d’Or back in 2009, the Barça number 10 has also taken the award in 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2015.

Lionel Messi will be joined by a large delegation from Barcelona for Monday’s Ballon d’Or gala in Paris at the Theatre du Chatelet. The Barça party will be led by president Josep Maria Bartomeu. Also traveling to the French capital are Javier Bordas (director), Oscar Grau (CEO), Guillermo Amor (institutional relations) and Eric Abidal (sporting director).
