Setién - a true believer in Barçelona’s youngsters
The new coach’s approach is a breath of fresh air
Quique Setién’s passionate belief and confidence in Barcelona’s youngsters could be compared to children who blindly believe in Santa Claus and the tooth fairy. Setién made it clear at his unveiling he thinks La Masia is an “extraordinary academy” and hopes to acquire some of Garcia Pimienta’s players for the first team.
After signing his two-and-a-half year contract with the Catalans, he was quick to establish his strong faith in La Masia products: “I want to look after the youngsters from the academy. If they earn it, surely they will play for the first team.”
And since taking charge of the team, he’s been showing his admiration for the Barça B players, and especially to the midfielder who should’ve been promoted a while ago: Riqui Puig.

The former Betis manager is a massive believer in Puig’s talent and abilities and it has already been visible. Setién has called up the young midfielder to train with the first team for the entire week ahead of Barça’s opening La Liga game of 2020 at the Camp Nou. But it doesn’t stop there.
Last night, Setién attended the Barça B match against Badalona, as he took a better look at the youngsters and assessed which ones could possibly make the jump to play alongside Messi and Co.
He is invested in the homegrown players, he is invested in using the resources that are already at his fingertips rather than going abroad to find them and, more importantly he is invested in the club playing well. What else do you want from a Barcelona manager? Now, all there’s left to do is to count down the hours until Sunday’s matchup against Granada to see how the team perform under their new man: Quique Setién
