The league probably doesn’t want this

La Liga teams could vote to end the 2019-20 season early due to the coronavirus crisis. And that could mean that no teams are relegated, while two teams are promoted from the second division, according to a new report.

Cádiz and Real Zaragoza would be promoted but Mallorca, Leganés, and Espanyol - who are currently in the relegation spots - would avoid the drop.

That’s because Cádiz and Real Zaragoza are in the automatic promotion spots right now. One more team would be promoted amongst the next four teams in Segunda, through a playoff system, in normal circumstances.

It’s understood that the league itself does not want to do this, primarily for financial reasons. Rather, they would want to finish out the season, at some point or another.

It’s unclear if a champion would be declared. At the moment, Barcelona top the table. Recently, Belgium’s Club Brugge became the first European champion declared by topping the table after a season was ended early.
