On this Day: Barcelona beat Arsenal to win UCL
The club claimed their second European Cup in Paris
Barcelona were busy beating 10-man Arsenal 2-1 in the Champions League final on this day back in 2006.
Arsenal goalkeeper Jens Lehmann made history early on in the game. The German was dismissed for bringing down Samuel Eto’o, becoming the first player to see red in the final.
Yet the Gunners still managed to take the lead despite being a man down.
Defender Sol Campbell headed the north Londoners in front on 37 minutes from a free-kick won after an outrageous Emmanuel Eboué dive.
Barcelona piled on the pressure after the break, although Arsenal remained a threat on the counter, and equalised when Henrik Larsson teed up Eto’o to tuck the ball home.
Larsson was at it again four minutes later. The substitute picked out Juliano Belletti to deliver the killer blow and secure Barcelona’s second European Cup.
