The Barcelona forward’s post comes as many in the United States protest the killing of George Floyd

Lionel Messi has made a post on his official Instagram which carries the hashtag “#BLM,” which stands for “Black Lives Matter.”

The Barcelona forward participated in the “#blackouttuesday” trend by posting a picture of a black square alongside the hashtag. This comes as multiple protests over many days in the United States demonstrate against the killing of George Floyd at the hands of a police officer.

The trend initially gained support as a way for people to pause and reflect on recent instances of police brutality. The initial focus was on the music industry, but it spread much further, with many celebrities and average people posting black squares.

It later became controversial as some activists worried that important information was being drowned out by these plain black squares. Read more about this trend here.
