The French defender would be rewarded for his performances

Clément Lenglet has been told by Barcelona that talks centered around extending his contract will begin either at the end of this year or the beginning of next, according to a new report.

The 25-year-old has three years left on his current deal, but it seems Barcelona want to reward him sooner than that. The French defender would get a salary increase that would put his deal in line with the contracts given to starting XI players.

Since arriving from Sevilla, Lenglet has become a starter after long term injuries have kept Samuel Umtiti away from the pitch.

The idea is to start talking about a contract renewal during the middle of next season, with an eye towards hammering it out by the end of the term.

While Lenglet seems set to secure a place as Gerard Piqué’s partner in defense, Umtiti has been linked with a rumored exit from the club. The FIFA World Cup winner has appeared only sparingly, playing below his old level, and is out injured again for the foreseeable future.
