Former FC Barcelona captain and manager Pep Guardiola has responded to the arrest of club president Josep Maria Bartomeu, alongside several other former higher-ups at the club,

“I know it is not a comfortable situation and I hope that everything ends well,” the Manchester City boss said.

“He is innocent until a judge says he is guilty.”

Barça are currently under an interim president, with elections around the corner. Joan Laporta, Toni Freixa, and Victor Font are the candidates to win the election, which will be decided by the club’s members.

“The only thing that worries me is that in a week we will have a new president. I hope that many people can vote to elect a president who can lead what for me is the best club in the world. I am looking forward to the elections on Sunday,” Guardiola commented.

The arrests follow the fallout of a controversy referred to as “Barçagate,” in which Bartomeu and others allegedly secretly misused club funds to smear personal and political enemies, including Guardiola himself.
