Ronald Koeman’s methods are in the spotlight again

Riqui Puig’s lack of game time at Barcelona this season has baffled supporters, and created plenty of debate among fans, and has reportedly not gone down too well with president Joan Laporta either.

According to RAC1, Laporta “does not understand” why Puig has not had a more prominent role at Barcelona under Koeman this season.

Puig has has only made 11 appearances in La Liga in 2020-21 with just two of those outings coming as a starter. His last appearance came over a month ago as a very late substitute against Real Valladolid.

The report also states that Laporta sees Puig as a “key piece” needed to keep the spirit of La Masia alive and serve as an example to the other young players at the academy

Koeman was asked about Puig and Miralem Pjanic’s lack of game time again at his pre-match presser on Monday but gave little away. He said only he didn’t like to make too many changes and his selection depended on “ training sessions, tactical decisions and formations.”

The Dutchman is not the only boss to have used Puig sparingly and most fans would surely love to at least know why the youngster is still sitting on the bench every week, particularly with Ilaix Moriba now seeing plenty of game time under Koeman.

If Koeman stays on then Puig may have a big decision to make over the summer. The youngster has repeatedly insisted he’s determined to succeed at Barca but will turn 22 in August and surely can’t spend another season on the sidelines.
