The defender could be heading back to France

Samuel Umtiti’s future at Barcelona remains unclear but a new report suggests the center-back could seal a return to former club Lyon on loan.

Lyon are said to be “working on a plan” to sign the World Cup winner and bring the 27-year-old back to the Ligue 1 club this summer, according to Sport.

The report reckons that Lyon are even confident “they could bring the player back to his pre-2018 form.”

Umtiti’s salary is a problem but the French club are thinking about a loan where they would cover “approximately 50% of his wage.” It’s not clear if Barca would be willing to accept such a deal.

The defender would also need to agree but has spoken fondly of Lyon in an interview with Canal Plus back in October,

“Lyon is my team. It is my city. It is the team that has given me the opportunity to play in Europe, in Barcelona and with the French national team,” he said. “There were discussions with them during the market, but there was never anything concrete with the club.”

Lyon appear to be the only contenders for Umtiti’s signature currently. There had been a few whispers that Marseille could be willing to take on Umtiti, but the Ligue 1 side have since brought in William Saliba from Arsenal and made Leonardo Balerdi’s loan from Dortmund permanent.
