The Parisiens’ dream is over

Paris Saint-Germain have reportedly given up on the idea of trying to land Lionel Messi on a free transfer this summer.

There had been speculation that the French side would make a late offer for the Argentina international after his contract at the Camp Nou expired.

However, according to Le Parisien the Ligue 1 side have now given up on the idea of reuniting Messi with Neymar at the Parc des Princes.

The feeling is Messi wants to stay at Barca, while PSG may struggle to afford Messi as they’vealready signed Gini Wijnaldum, Achraf Hakimi, Sergio Ramos and Gianluigi Donnarumma this summer as well as handing Neymar a new contract.

Messi is off on holiday now after leading Argentina to Copa America glory, while Barcelona are busy trying to find a way to afford the captain’s new contract.

President Joan Laporta has once again this week insisted that things are progressing well but it seems like a few more departures will be needed to make the numbers work.

A new report on Tuesday claims that Barca would be able to afford Messi either by selling Antoine Griezmann or by three of the team’s top earners taking a 40% pay cut.

Barca are said to be “working hard” to find a buyer for Griezmann who would prefer a move back to Atletico but that does not seem to be a transfer the Catalans will approve.

Griezmann is due to return to Barcelona training on July 20, after taking a break following Euro 2020, and his future at the club may become clearer at that time.
