Things will not be the same without the captain

Dani Alves has offered his thoughts on Lionel Messi’s departure from Barcelona and says it’s not the right time for the Argentine to be leaving the Camp Nou.

Barca announced the news on Thursday and Messi is expected to say his farewells and speak about his departure on Sunday at a press conference.

Alves says he was sorry to hear the news but thinks that Barca can rise to the challenge of coping without their greatest ever player.

“I am very sorry for Messi and Barça. Now is not a good time for either side. I think Barça will not be the same because Barça with Messi is one thing, and Barça without Messi is another,” he said.

“But Barça will continue to be Barça and Messi will continue to be Messi. It’s a new challenge for Messi and for Barça, but I think challenges make you better most of the time, because they force you out of your comfort zone.”

The 38-year-old was speaking after helping Brazil win Olympic gold with a 2-1 win over Spain on Saturday. The result gives Dani Alves the 44th title of his extraordinary career and adds yet another honor to his collection.
