Opportunity knocks for Faye at Barca after Araujo’s injury
A golden chance to stake a claim
Mikayil Faye looked all set to depart Barcelona a few short weeks ago after it emerged the club were in talks over a transfer to FC Porto.
However, the proposed deal fell through and, fast forward a couple of weeks, it suddenly it looks as though the 20-year-old could be about to become a key player for Hansi Flick’s side.
Barca will start the season short of defensive options, giving Faye a golden chance to try and force his way into the team and stay there.

Ronald Araujo is set to undergo surgery on a hamstring injury and will be out for four months, Eric Garcia and Pau Cubarsi are expected to take a break after the Olympics, while Jules Kounde may be needed at right-back still.
Barca may also need Andreas Christensen to continue in midfield (due to injuries to Frenkie de Jong and Pedri) while Inigo Martinez isn’t even registered for the 2024-25 La Liga season just yet.
Meanwhile, reports have claimed Flick has been pleasantly surprised by Faye’s performances after the first week of pre-season training. The youngster will also be part of the upcoming tour to the United States where he will get more chances to impress.
Faye may not be Flick’s first choice to take over from Araujo, and much may depend on where he wants Kounde to play, but he definitely has the physical profileto replace the Uruguay international.
Throw in the fact he’s left-footed, has great set-piece ability and has previously been backed by Rafa Marquez to make the first team and he certainly is an intriguing option to have.
It’s been claimed previously that Faye was left disappointed at not being able to debut last season under Xavi, but he may not have to wait too much longer to make his first-team bow.
