Another impressive win for Hansi Flick’s side

Big win to start a big week for Barcelona

Barcelona began a big week for the club with a handsome win over Sevilla that brought five goals, the long-awaited return of Gavi and plenty of feelgood ahead of tough tests against Bayern Munich and Real Madrid.

Flick announced his intentions from the get-go, starting Robert Lewandowski and Lamine Yamal - despite the pair both taking knocks over the international break - and making it crystal clear he was not going to let Barca’s long winning streak over Sevilla end.

Lewandowski warmed up for the visit from his former club with two goals, Pedri bagged a great goal, Lamine Yamal grabbed another assist, Pau Cubarsi put in a really classy showing and Jules Kounde celebrated his 100th appearance for the club.

It was the kind of night that gave Flick “goosebumps”, as he readily admitted afterwards, and leaves the team in great shape ahead of the two biggest tests of their season so far over the next few days.

Lewandowski and Yamal match Messi

Barcelona have been scoring for fun this season and that theme continued on Sunday night at Montjuic with another five added to their goals for column in the table.

That’s now 33 in 10 La Liga games for Flick’s Barcelona. A quick look through the record books shows that only Pep Guardiola and Zinedine Zidane (both with 34) have a better record over the same amount of games.

Lewandowski leads the way with 12 and has become the first player to hit that number after 10 games since Lionel Messi back in the 2019-20 season.

Yet he’s not the only player eyeing Messi records. Yamal’s sixth assist of the season means he’s the first Barca player to hit that number after 10 games since Messi managed seven in the 2014-15 campaign.

The sound of Barca fans chanting Gavi’s name as he prepared to make his long-awaited comeback also brought back memories of Messi.

Certainly there seems to be a real emotional connection between the team and the supporters right now that hasn’t been felt this strongly for a little while.

Torre outshines Ansu with double

First-team chances may be hard to come by for both Ansu Fati and Pablo Torre this season, but the midfielder certainly took advantage of his on Sunday with two goals against Sevilla.

The midfielder, who was tipped to leave in the summer, now has three goals and an assist in five La Liga outings for Barcelona this season. Those are the sort of numbers that should ensure he gets more chances.

Of course the big problem for Torre will simply be the competition for places, particularly with the likes of Gavi, Fermin Lopez, Dani Olmo and Frenkie de Jong all now back from injury and ready to play.

Fati too will need to take advantage of any chances he gets. He was a late addition to the starting XI, after Eric Garcia dropped out with a knock, but looked a little off the pace and couldn’t really shine.

“For Ansu it is important to be able to play. After being injured for a long time, he has not had a good time. It is good that he has been able to play. He will improve,” Flick said afterwards.

Yet with Barcelona’s injury problems starting to improve it’s hard to predict when we might see Fati again, and this certainly felt like a missed opportunity for the forward, particularly on a night when Torre went home smiling.
