A tough result to take

Barcelona striker Robert Lewandowski says the players are “p*ssed off” after losing to Atletico Madrid in La Liga on Saturday night.

The Catalans looked set for victory after going 1-0 up through Pedri’s goal but couldn’t finish their chances and were caught out by two Atletico goals.

Lewandowski spoke out after the match and didn’t hide his frustration at the result.

“I think the locker room is pissed off. We played a good match. It looked great in the first half, and in the second as well. Atletico created chances after our mistakes,” he told Eleven Sports.

“In the last minute it was a draw, and we played as if we were losing the final and had to score a goal at all costs.

“We made mistakes when Atletico countered us. We played well, but we didn’t use our chances. I think that recently we lack self-confidence, calmness in the penalty area.”

The striker also called on his team to learn from the game and believes the Christmas break will help the team regroup.

“This is a lesson for us: if you can’t win, don’t lose the match. This has happened to us a few times this round. I believe that we will come back stronger in the new year,” he added.

“The season is long. We had some ups and downs. With a young team, spikes in form happen. We played well against Atletico, but we lost. That’s a lesson for us. We were missing the icing on the cake.

“The break can make us draw conclusions and stop making such mistakes. This is football. Sometimes there are such phases. You have to go through them. I believe that we will get back on track. Sometimes you have to push through these matches when something is not going our way.”

Lewandowski has scored 16 goals in 18 La Liga games so far this season but he’ll know hw really should have added to his tally against Atletico when served up a glorious chance.
