‘Everything’s possible’ - Flick talks Barca’s UCL hopes
The Catalans are through
Hansi Flick says “everything’s possible” when asked about Barcelona’s hopes of lifting the European Cup this season after finishing second in the new-look group phase.
Barca finished only behind Liverpool in the standings to ensure they automatically progress to the knockout phase.
The Catalans will take on Brest, PSG, Benfica or Monaco in the next round, and Flick says winning the competition will be difficult but his team are optimistic.
“To win the Champions League is really one of the hardest things to do. It’s tough, but we are positive. We will give everything. It’s not easy to win this competition. Liverpool are performing really well; they have a wonderful team. It depends when you play them, one match or two... Everything’s possible. We’ll compete for everything until the end of the season,” he said.
”Now we’ll see what the route forward is. We can’t change these things and we’ll just wait to see what the draw gives us. That’s OK. There are a lot of big, big clubs. The next round will be really tough.”
Flick also gave his verdict on his team’s performance against Atalanta which ended in a 2-2 draw on Wednesday night.
”We played a very good team with a great philosophy. We had the confidence to build up really well, so that went fine,” he added.
“Second half, we wanted to make things different, and the first goal came from that. We’ve taken the first step in the Champions League, and it’s been a big success for the team and the club.
”Today, I saw a lot we do well, but I also saw things we can make better. After every match, we try to be better next time out – that’ll be the same now.”
The draw for the Champions League play-offs is due to take place on Friday, with the draw for the last-16 and subsequent rounds set for 21 February 2025.
