Flick explains decision to start Szczęsny against Valencia
A surprise choice
Barcelona manager Hansi Flick has named Wojciech Szczęsny in his starting XI to face Valencia in La Liga on Sunday.
The decision is something of a surprise as Inaki Pena was expected to return between the sticks for the Catalans.
Szczesny has had a tricky time at Barcelona so far. He was sent off in the Super Cup Clasico and made a couple of errors against Benfica last time out.
Here’s what Flick said when asked about his decision to go with Szczesny:
“We made the decision to put Tek in. One of the reasons is because we haven’t lost with him yet,” he told reporters.
Flick has made several other changes to his team for the match. Eric Garcia, Ferran Torres and Frenkie de Jong all start as the German coach goes for some rotation.
The Barcelona boss did say before the match he would make changes because he felt his side “needs fresh legs” after a busy run of fixtures.
