The goalkeeper was on the wanted list

Former Sevilla goalkeeper Tomas Vaclik has revealed that Barcelona were interested in signing him after Marc-Andre ter Stegen’s injury but opted for Wojciech Szczęsny instead.

Ter Stegen was ruled out for the long term in September after sustaining a serious knee injury that required surgery.

The injury put Barcelona in the market for a new goalkeeper and Vaclik, who has played for a host of clubs including Sparta Prague, Basel, Sevilla, Olympiacos and Huddersfield in his career, was apparently an option.

Here’s what he had to say:

“I was approached by Barcelona to replace Ter Stegen, but in the end they chose Szczesny,” he told TVP Sport.

“It’s a great moment for him. He was one of the best goalkeepers in Europe and suddenly they told him he was no longer part of the project, so he decided to retire.”

Szczęsny had to wait to make his debut at Barcelona but has since featured, although he’s struggled to impress. The Pole was sent off in the Super Cup and put in an error-strewn display in the Champions League against Benfica.
