Three talking points from Getafe 1-1 Barcelona
Hansi Flick’s side were in action on Saturday
Welcome to Getafe, Hansi Flick
Hansi Flick became the latest Barcelona boss to fail to win at Getafe on Saturday night as the Catalan giants departed with just a point and bags of frustration.
Getafe is never an easy place to play for numerous reasons and Barca hadn’t tasted victory - or even scored - at the Coliseum Alfonso Perez since 2019.

That run continued on Saturday as Barca took the lead after just nine minutes but went on to concede and then saw Getafe employ their usual negative tactics to secure a precious point.
It was a far cry from midweek when Barca were smashing five past Betis in the Copa del Rey. At the same time, Getafe were sneaking past fourth division side Pontevedra 1-0 in a game where they boasted 16.4% possession and completed 79 passes (compared to Pontevedra’s 675).

▪️ Had two players sent off
▪️ Only had 16.4% possession
▪️ Completed 79 passes (Pontevedra had 675)
▪️ Advanced to the quarterfinals

Flick insisted he’d “never experienced anything like this before” when talking about Getafe afterwards but the display really should come as no real surprise and Barca did create enough chances to win.
Of course the match was marred by Alejandro Balde being subjected to despicable racist abuse at the Coliseum. Let’s hope La Liga take action.
Should Kounde have had a penalty?
Jules Kounde has turned into a goal machine this week for Barcelona. He scored in the win over Betis, and was unlucky not to bag a brace, and was on target again on Saturday.
Pedri was the architect with a pass that you’ll never get tired of watching, and one that thrilled Gerard Pique, while Kounde showed real determination to put the ball in the back of the net.
Yet the defender should probably have had two goals. Lewandowski’s header from a Balde cross only needed a touch at the far post from Kounde, or Ronald Araujo, but both missed.
And then there’s the penalty shout. Kounde seemed to be bundled over in the penalty area by Uche but nothing was given, and he refused to comment about the incident when asked directly after the match.

The penalty claim seems to get stronger every time you watch the clip, particularly when you compare it to the penalty Real Madrid won here when Antonio Rudiger was tugged back, and will be another source of frustration for Barcelona.
Meanwhile, that’s now three goals and seven assists in all competitions this season for Kounde. According to Mister Chip, that makes him the first defender in Spanish football with 10 direct goal involvements this season.
Barcelona fail to take advantage of Atletico loss
Barcelona’s draw continues their disappointing La Liga form and comes after sparkling wins against Real Madrid and Real Betis in cup competition. However, it’s a different story in the league as Barca has now taken just six points out of the last 24 available.

Barcelona in LaLiga since the start of November:
• Most big chances missed (22)
• Largest xG underperformance (-6.42)
• Joint-13th in points won (9)

Flick addressed that very statistic after the match: “It’s not how we wanted to do it. We’ve lost a lot of points. We wanted to do better. I’m happy with the start of the year, we’ve started well.
“We have to show that we can continue that way. Now we have an important match in the Champions League, with three points we’ll be in the next round. But we have to play better.”
Yet despite how good Barca have looked under Flick at times this season, the team’s points tally doesn’t make for impressive reading.
39 - #Barcelona have 39 points after their first 20 games in @LaLigaEn 2024/25 (W12 D3 L5). Since the 2004/05 season, only once have they scored fewer points: 2021/22 (32 points - W8 D4 L4). Crash. pic.twitter.com/1rEBIlDwfp

What is even more disappointing is that Barca failed to fully capitalise on Atletico Madrid’s slip-up earlier in the day
Diego Simeone’s side had won 15 games on the bounce in La Liga to become winter champions and ensure they are firmly in the fight for the title but went down a1-0 to Leganes.
Barca are now five points behind Atletico but may lose further ground later today. Real Madrid will go top and be seven points ahead of Barca if they beat Las Palmas at the Bernabeu.
