The defender isn’t quite ready

Barcelona defender Alejandro Balde has been ruled out of Wednesday’s Champions League semi-final first leg against Inter.

Balde had been hoping to provide his fitness for the game at Montjuic after missing the last few weeks with a hamstring problem but the match has come too soon for the defender.

Hansi Flick’s side trained on Tuesday without the defender, and Robert Lewandowski who remains sidelines, and will have to cope without him against Inter.

According to AS, Barcelona felt there was a high risk of relapse if Balde did play and have decided not to take any risks.

Instead the plan is for him to enjoy some minutes at the weekend against Real Valladolid, with a view to potentially starting the second leg at San Siro next week.

Gerard Martin appears to be Flick’s preferred choice at back-up when Balde is out and is expected to take his place on Wednesday night.
