‘I know I’ll be at Barca next season’ - Ter Stegen reacts to Garcia talk
The goalkeeper is not interested in leaving
Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen has sent out a strong message on his future amid speculation he could be sold if Joan Garcia arrives from Espanyol.
The Catalans are said to be closing in on a deal for Garcia, and the thinking seems to be that he will be No. 1 if he does join Hansi Flick’s side.
Ter Stegen is currently on international duty with Germany and was asked about the speculation at a press conference.
Here’s what he has had to say:
“Nobody has spoken to me. I know I’ll be in Barcelona next year,” he told reporters. Barça is one of the biggest clubs, and competition is normal.
“For me, the situation isn’t changing. I’m extremely excited about next season with a team that’s very young, dynamic, and hungry.
”I haven’t spoken to Hansi and there hasn’t been any contact in recent days because I don’t see any reason for that at the moment. Nothing has happened that justifies the conversation. Honestly, the focus right now is here.”
Ter Stegen also says that as far as he knows, he will be battling for the No. 1 spot with Inaki Pena next season.
“If I remember correctly, and if nothing new has happened in the last few hours, we only have two goalkeepers for next season, Iñaki and I,” he said.
“So, basically, we have competition for this position, and it’s between Iñaki and I, and whoever comes in always has to deal with this competition, no matter what. Any player, in any position, has to deal with that. The same thing happened in recent years, as we had great goalkeepers, who also came with great ambitions. And that’s how it should be.
Yet it seems highly likely that Inaki will leave in the summer after slipping down the pecking order, while Wojciech Szczęsny is expected to stay after sign the contract extension that’s been offered.
