Bayern chief says Flick and Barca ‘surprised’ by Williams snub
The news also shocked Bayern
Bayern Munich’s Uli Hoeness says Hansi Flick and Barcelona were indeed left surprised by Nico Williams’ decision to extend his contract at Athletic Club because they virtually had an agreement with the Spain star.
Athletic announced on Friday that Williams had penned a long-term deal with the club, ending weeks of speculation that he was going to sign for Barcelona.
The Catalans are said to have been left shocked and angry by the decision, and Hoeness says the news also took Bayern by surprise.
“We all were. I’m also in close contact with Hansi Flick, who’s currently on vacation at Tegernsee,” he said, via Sky Sport Germany. “And they were surprised too, because they more or less already had an agreement.
“I don’t quite understand what he wants now. But in my opinion, some people just want more money. He had a transfer fee of 60 million, and now they’re trying to get more next year.”
Bayern and Barcelona will now look for alternative transfer targets, with both clubs believed to have interest in Luis Diaz and Marcus Rashford.
