The former Barça player will have his second stint as an assistant

Barcelona are set to make a new addition to their coaching staff as former Blaugrana midfielder Thiago Alcântara is close to a deal to return to the club for his second stint in Hansi Flick’s staff, according to a report from ESPN.

Thiago spent a few weeks in Flick’s staff last summer and is credited with helping the coach adapt to life in a new country. The two were very close during Thiago’s time as a Bayern Munich player with Flick as his coach, and that relationship carried over to the beginning of Hansi’s tenure in Catalonia.

But Thiago was forced to leave his position due to various bureaucratic issues, and had to wait until the club could create enough salary cap space — coaches’ wages also count in La Liga’s complicated salary cap rules — to bring him back on a permanent basis.

The report says Barça are “working on a series of deals” to have enough space to bring Thiago into the fold, and his return could be made official soon. Thiago is expected to play a mentorship role as an assistant, offering his vast knowledge and experience to what is still a young Barça team, especially in midfield.
