The two met on Friday

Hansi Flick and goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen were both at Barcelona on Friday ahead of the start of pre-season.

According to Catalunya Radio, the two did meet to discuss the future after a summer where Barcelona have brought in Joan Garcia from Espanyol.

This has led to speculation that Ter Stegen will be sold before the start of the campaign, but it’s been said that the German does want to leave.

During the meeting, Flick told Ter Stegen that things have indeed changed and that he is no longer the team’s undisputed No. 1 goalkeeper.

Flick has apparently said that he doesn’t have a first choice yet, and so it is up to Ter Stegen, Joan Garcia and Wojciech Szczęsny to battle it out for the starting spot.

The Barcelona coach therefore told Ter Stegen that, if he’s happy with that situation, then he is welcome to fight for his place in the team.

Yet Flick also made it clear that Ter Stegen needs to understand that the club had to think about a successor, given he is 33 and has just recovered from a very serious knee injury.

The word for now is that Barcelona will not actively try to force Ter Stegen out, even though his exit would help financially, but he now know that if he wants to play he’s going to have to outperform his rivals.
