The goalkeeper was eventually sent off

Barcelona’s win over Valencia saw goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili sent off in the first half for a handball outside the penalty area that stopped Lamine Yamal going through on goal.

The incident was checked by the VAR who instructed match referee Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea to go and check the monitor. A red card was then quickly produced and Valencia reduced to 10 men.

Marca have now revealed the chat between the VAR team and the match referee to offer some insight into the decision-making process.

“Ricardo. I recommend an on field review for possible DOGSO (Denying an Obvious Goal Scoring Opportunity) of goalkeeper Mamardashvili in the battle with Lamine Yamal... I’m going to give you two cameras. The reverse left and then left goal, so you can see the position of the hand,” said Jaime Latre.

“Okay. Calm down,” replied De Burgos Bengoetxea.

“We are going to go with a direct free kick and a red card for a clear chance of scoring,” Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea then decided.

It was of course the right call and one that proved key to the match. Barca were trailing 2-1 at the time but went on to beat the 10-men of Valencia 4-2.
