Chelsea move made Pedro most profitable La Masia product ever
For many, many years, La MasÃa was known as the best provider of talents to Barcelona, and the players that came through the youth system ranks became huge stars. For the last few season, however, La Masia products have brought some good money.
With his €30 million move to Chelsea, Pedro RodrÃguez, who joined La MasÃa 11 years ago was promoted to the first team due to his performances at Barça B, became the most profitable product from the youth academy in club history.
To be clear, this is not the highest transfer fee for a La MasÃa player, because that belongs to Cesc Fà bregas' €33 million sale to the same Blue team from London last summer. However, the Blaugrana did spend €34 million to bring him back from Arsenal a few years ago, so they actually lost money with Fà bregas. Barça bought Pedro for only €410,000 from Raquà San Isidro in 2004, and they get a multi-millionaire return.
Pedro's transfer fee also ranks higher than the figures of other big-money moves, like the sales of Ronaldo (€27M), Alexis Sánchez (€26M), Ronaldinho (€25M), Ibrahimovic (€24M) and Sonny Anderson (€18M) -- according to Marca. In many of those cases, the moves were made decades ago, when the market value was a lot lower. Still, it's an interesting stat.
Finally, good business!
