FC Barcelona v Athletic Club by the numbers
The Catalans have control of the game with 69% possession and eleven shots more than their opponents
A selection of facts and figures from the 1-1 draw in Monday night’s Spanish Super Cup second leg between FC Barcelona and Athletic Club:
Barça managed 17 shots on goal but just four of those were on target. Athletic ended the game with six attempts, eleven less than the home side.
Typically, the Catalans dominated proceedings, as they enjoyed 69% of the possession over the 90 minutes.
Javier Mascherano had a busy evening in defence, ending the night with the most interceptions (15).
Dani Alves was the player who attempted the most passes, with a total of 104.
Mascherano made the most successful passes, with 87 of his intended exchanges accurately finding their target as Alves came a close second with 84.
With a big obstacle to overcome, Lionel Messi tried to take matters into his own hands as he attempted the most take-ons in the match (14).
Luis Suárez had the most shots on goal with five, but to no avail.
Just like in the first leg at San Mamés, Barcelona hit the woodwork at the Camp Nou. Gerard Pique’s excellent half volley with his weaker left foot crashed off the crossbar after just six minutes to deny Barça a dream start.
Claudio Bravo made his first appearance of the new season for Barcelona after rejoining the squad later than his colleagues due to Chile’s Copa America win.
Alves, Mascherano, Pedro, Suárez and Messi were the only players from the first leg’s lineup to be in Monday’s starting eleven.
