Florenzi Reflects About Lobbing Marc-Andre ter Stegen, Playing Barcelona
Remember that goal? Of course you do -- and in an interview with UEFA, Alessandro Florenzi has opened up about why he went for goal and his thoughts on playing against FC Barcelona
With one swing of his right boot, Alessandro Florenzi catapulted himself into temporary super-stardom. His sensational 60-yard chip against Marc-Andre ter Stegen and FC Barcelona will headline highlight packages for years and decades to come; in an age of Vine and embeddable videos on social media, Florenzi instantly went viral and the world was saturated with endless clips of his wonder goal.
Begrudgingly, even the most ardent Barcelona supporter could do nothing but applaud the goal; it was truly a masterpiece and for us and so many other football fans, the strike was met with a sense of disbelief -- not to mention a couple of fundamental questions:
Why?
How?
And now, in an exclusive interview with UEFA (go ahead and click here to read the whole thing, it's worth your time), Florenzi has opened up about scoring that goal, and shared his thought process when he went for goal.
"I saw that the goalkeeper was standing outside his box, and there weren't many other options, so destiny made me score that beautiful goal."Alessandro Florenzi, speaking to UEFA.com
I personally like how in that instant, that single moment where he made a split-second decision, Florenzi actually considered the shot to be an option in the first place. The Italian midfielder-turned-full-back then went on to discuss his feelings on the result, and playing Barcelona. Spoiler: he had some nice things to say about our club.
"To get a draw in a match like that was difficult, because we were playing against the strongest team in the world. I honestly thought more about the result than my equaliser."
Thanks for the kind words Alessandro -- just do us a favour, and hold off scoring another one like this at the Camp Nou in November?
