In their treble-winning campaign last season, FC Barcelona squared off against Atletico Madrid four times, and emerged victorious on each and every occasion. The margin of victory was often narrow -- in three of the matches, Barça won by a single goal and certainly it was never easy; we had to dig deep and really call upon our best football to escape with these wins. However, we managed to do that consistently and erase all memories of Atleti's recent run of good form against us.

The La Liga title win at the Camp Nou? The UEFA Champions League quarter-final win? Distant afterthoughts, as the Blaugrana once again asserted their authority and demonstrated their superiority over Madrid's second-biggest club.

This season it could be different once more. Atletico Madrid look sharper, hungrier and their squad is deeper. The firepower that they were lacking last year following the sale of Diego Costa has been addressed with the arrival of Jackson Martinez and Luciano Vietto; the return of Filipe Luis will help to shore up an already miserly defense and really, all over the pitch, there can be no debate that Atleti possess world-class talent.

So far, they've been impressive. Defeating Las Palmas was expected, but their demolition of Sevilla really caught the eye, especially in comparison to Barcelona's admittedly lacklustre displays against Athletic Bilbao and Malaga CF. The long and short of it is that Barça need to improve -- and fast -- if they are to harbour any hopes of escaping the Calderon with all three points tonight.
