A Fan’s Perspective: Sergi Roberto should be Barcelona’s long-term right-back
He’s just that good...
There’s no denying it anymore. Sergi Roberto is an excellent player. The Catalan once lived in the shadow of Thiago. Time, however, has helped him carve his name in Barca folklore forever.
When Luis Enrique pushed Roberto out wide, there was heavy criticism on the player. He had looked decent against lowly clubs but struggled to play the full 90 minutes with high intensity. The hounds came out and tore apart Enrique for ruining a good talent by playing him out of his position.
However, Roberto was no longer just a talent. At 24, it was all or nothing. He turned things around for himself and took a giant piece of the pie. When Nelson Semedo signed, those hounds rejoiced, for they could finally see Roberto do his thing in midfield.
Alas, Valverde and Lucho thought alike. Semedo has been a marginal figure as Roberto continues to dominate.
Sergi has been sensational for the Blaugrana and for better or worse, has the stats to prove it. He might be a phenomenal midfielder but his performances at right-back have been remarkable to say the least.
What’s changed? Nothing. Roberto is just that good.
If one were to ask me, he has earned the right to stay Barcelona’s first-choice right-back for the entirety of his career here.
