Gerard Piqué Jokes: “I Won’t Be Able to Sleep” If Real Madrid Don’t Give Barcelona the Pasillo
Real Madrid have said they do not plan on giving a guard of honor
“I won’t be able to sleep.” That was the ironic retort from Gerard Piqué when asked to respond to Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane saying los blancos will not give Barcelona a pasillo, or guard of honor, if the Blaugrana win the league title before the next scheduled Clásico.
The pasillo would normally be done before the start of the match by the team set to play the newly crowned league champions. Barcelona could win the league title right before their next meeting with Madrid. Tradition would hold that, in that case, Madrid would have to give Barcelona a guard of honor. Barcelona did it for Madrid in 2008.
Barcelona did not give Madrid a pasillo in their most recent meeting, when the capital-based team had just won the Club World Cup. Teams have previously given Club World Cup winners a pasillo but it’s not done always. The league title pasillo is a much stronger tradition, and the break would be much more significant. However, the Barcelona defender seemed completely unphased by the prospect.
