Valverde: We should have created more

The champions drew a blank at San Mames

Ernesto Valverde admitted Barcelona struggled in attack after being held to a goalless draw by Athletic Bilbao on Sunday.

The visitors found it tough going at San Mames and created very few chances. Lionel Messi hit the crossbar in the first half but that was about as good as it got.

Valverde offered his view on the match after the final whistle.

“We couldn’t really get going in the last third of the field. We thought the game would have more rhythm and it just didn’t turn out like that,” he said.

“We’re just responsible for what we do and I think in general, we should have created more than we did.

“They pressed us high, but we did get through that and we did get through to their box.

“But then that left us exposed to counter-attacks and they created problems.”

Barcelona were indebted to goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen for preserving a point with a string of fine saves against an impressive Athletic Bilbao side.

The result means Barcelona stay top, now six points clear and unbeaten in La Liga in their last 11 games.
