Barcelona look to rectify historical record against Liverpool
Barça have had poor results against the Reds
FC Barcelona will be looking to reverse historical trends as they are set to face Liverpool tonight at the Camp Nou. Despite having a pattern of dominance over English teams in general, Barça’s record against Liverpool in Catalonia is weak.
That may be because many of Barcelona’s good results against English opposition have occurred in the Pep Guardiola era up to the present, or in other words, the Lionel Messi era.
Two goalless draws, two losses, and just one goal, that’s all Barcelona has mustered at home against the Reds. By comparison, the Catalan giants have won 21 and drawn 11 in matches against other English clubs at the Camp Nou.
However, the fact that it was so long ago suggests this history is not very relevant tonight. Still, Liverpool are an extremely tough opponent. On the other hand, Barcelona have the best in the world - Messi.
Messi played against Liverpool in the past, in the 2006-2007 season, but not since in official competitions. The Merseyside club has not faced Messi after he reached his prime.
Looking at more recent history, Barcelona did falter in a 2016 preseason friendly, losing 4-0 at Wembley Stadium. But that was merely an exhibition match.
