The president has opened up on his club’s pursuit of the PSG star

Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu says Neymar is not in the club’s plans for January and has opened up on their pursuit of the PSG star.

Neymar was heavily linked with a Camp Nou return all summer, but a move failed to materialise as Barca and PSG could not agree a deal.

Bartomeu says his club did not offer players as part of the deal, contrary to various reports, and did all they could to try to land the Brazilian.

“He’s not in the plans for January,” he said.

“Barcelona couldn’t meet PSG’s demands [this summer]. Barcelona never offered players for Neymar, it was PSG that asked for them. We did everything possible to sign him.

”It’s a fact that Neymar asked PSG to negotiate only with Barcelona. The signing wasn’t easy, on a economic or social level. Messi didn’t tell me to sign Neymar, that’s a myth.

”The players don’t have a say in signings, it’s the sporting department, technical department and the directors who decide.”

Barcelona have already been linked with a move for Neymar in 2020, and Bartomeu’s comments are unlikely to stop the speculation. Rumors have also claimed that Neymar was left in tears at his failure to secure a return to his former club.
