The teenager will move to the Camp Nou next summer

Barcelona splent lavishly over the summer but one deal which went under the radar a little was the acquisition of Spanish starlet Pedri from Las Palmas.

The Spanish champions snapped up the 16-year-old in a deal which will see him remain at Las Palmas for the 2019-20 season and join Barcelona on 1 July 2020.

Barcelona will pay an initial €5 million to bring in Pedri on a two-year deal with the option of two more seasons. Las Palmas will be entitled to 15% of any future sale.

Yet in a move which shows just how highly Barcelona rate the youngster, they have announced his contract will include a release clause of €100m, rising to €400m when he becomes registered for the first team.

Las Palmas president Miguel Angel Rodriguez told Marca the fee “could go up to 25 million euros in the coming years” and claimed Barca beat off competition from Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid and “a foreign club, who offered nine million euros.”

The teenager has enjoyed a bright start to his second season with Las Palmas. He has three goals and three assists in nine outings and was particularly impressive in Sunday’s 3-0 win over Deportivo La Coruna,

There were only 12 minutes on the clock when he produced his first assist, a gorgeous defence-splitting pass that allowed Tomas Pekhart to open the scoring. Another assist followed to give Pekhart his second on the half-hour mark.

Las Palmas went on to clinch a 3-0 victory that makes it four wins in a row and sends them into fifth place in the Segunda Division standings after 11 games, just a point off second place.

The bad news for the club is that they are about to lose Pedri for a few weeks to the Under-17 World Cup. The youngster has been included in Spain’s squad for the tournament which kicks off in Brazil on October 26.

Pedri is in the squad along with Barcelona youngsters Jose Martinez and Ilaix Moriba of Juvenil A. He is already being tipped to be one of the stars of the tournament and you can bet Barca will be watching his performances closely.
